COUNCILLOR COULD BE BETTER EMPLOYED
Councillor 'could be better employed'
Sir,
As an Orange officer, I heartily endorse Mr. Ross Hussey's reply to Councillor Begley's mischievous comments re the use of the Campsie Playing Fields for the Twelfth of July demonstration. I believe this was the same councillor who complained bitterly about the way this nationalist town was decorated for the July 1 parade and called for the flags and bunting to be taken down.
Like Mr. Hussey, I feel this Sinn Fein councillor was simply trying to stir up trouble in a town where community relations have always been good, certainly when I was a town councillor. It is pretty obvious that Councillor Begley still isn't willing to tolerate my community celebrating its culture on a couple of days in the month of July this year.
I would also like to support Mr. Hussey's suggestion that Councillor Begley might be better employed getting on with his council duties, encouraging the officials to clean up the town, removing weeds and litter which are such an eyesore wherever one turns. He might care to take a stroll in the direction of the council's leisure complex and feast his beady eye on the 'peace' rose bed, which was a proper disgrace, with scarcely a yellow rose to be seen due to the proliferation of weedy material.
On inspection recently, I would venture to say that the 'weeding operation' and border edging could have been more thoroughly executed.
One would want the town to be looking its best, especially when more visitors will be around for the Omagh bomb anniversary. No doubt the former chairman of a neighbouring council, where floral displays are always superb and everything looking neat and tidy, would agree with me.
