Atrocity has had 'lasting effect on firefighters'
THE chief fire officer of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has said the Omagh bomb has had a lasting effect on his officers who helped the emergency operation at the scene.
"The thoughts of Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service are with the people of Omagh as we remember those who were killed and injured in the Omagh bomb," said Colin Lammey, speaking before the 10th anniversary commemoration on Friday. "We remember also the family and friends of the victims and the wider community who were all affected by the events of 15th August 1998.
"The firefighters who attended the scene of the bomb to help with the rescue operation, remember only too well what took place that day. Their efforts to help save life and assist those injured, whilst working in the most difficult of conditions, are something that has had a profound and lasting effect on both the individuals involved and the organisation as a whole and is something we will never forget.
"At what is undoubtedly a very difficult and emotional time our thoughts remain with all those affected by the Omagh bomb," he added.
