TWIN TOWN OFFERS MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR FUTURE
Twin town' offers message of hope for future
Many thoughtful messages of hope were offered last Friday, when the town of Omagh marked the 10th anniversary of the car bomb attack which ripped through its very heart on a sunny day in August, 1998.
One such message of hope came from Jacqueline Geyl, the deputy major in charge of the twinning programme, in which Omagh is linked with L'Hay Les Roses, France.
Speaking last Friday on behalf of the Lord Mayor of L'Hay Les Roses, the deputy major said: "We now want to deliver a series of messages to victims of the attack and their families, relatives and friends - a message of respect, a message of friendship, a message of support and a message of hope.
"We have come here today to show our deep respect and pay homage to all the victims of the horrible attack that happened 10 years ago.
"As a matter of fact, it happened shortly after our twinning, and so we were utterly devastated by the terrible news, incredulously listening to the news flashes describing the unthinkable.
"Ever since, we have exchanged with you on a respectful and friendly basis, our twinning thus allowing our both cities to get to know and understand each other better and better.
"It has been a long way to reach today, but today we are gathered together in this moving ceremony, no matter what our beliefs are, and today we are all standing on the same side.
"Our last message is one of peace, for heading toward a true peaceful situation is the main condition that will enable Northern Ireland to stand among United Europe."
