Exhibition on the development of the 'Garden of Light' Memorial
An exhibition of the development of the 'Garden of Light' Memorial is open at the Community House.
The displays trace the progress of the memorial from the selection of the design following an international competition to the completion of the project in time for the 10th anniversary commemorative ceremony on Friday. Artist's impressions, architect's drawings and photographs show how this creative and artistic memorial concept became a reality.
Of particular interest in the exhibition is a series of drawings explaining the cutting-edge technology of the heliostats. These two large computer-controlled mirrors track the sun and throw a constant beam of sunlight onto the 31 smaller mirrors in the garden, which in turn bounce the light onto the Tyrone crystal heart set in the glass pillar at the bomb site.
Said a statement from Omagh District Council: "The exhibition also includes the development of the other significant element of the memorial, the narrative. An Independent Facilitation Team, chaired by the former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church Dr John Dunlop, held over 80 meetings with a wide range of those affected by the bomb and recommended a lengthy narrative which told the story of 15 August 1998 in a sensitive, factual, yet inspirational manner."
The exhibition will continue until August 22, 2008.
