OFFICER'S STATEMENTS CONTRADICT OMBUDSMAN'S REPORT
Officers' statements contradict part of PSNI response to Ombudsman's report - claim
TWO senior police officers have made sworn written statements that are claimed to contradict a part of the response made by the PSNI to the Ombudsman's report into the Omagh bomb investigation.
Currently the Northern Ireland Police Association is taking legal action against Nuala O'Loan's office in relation to her office's critical report into the investigation. Their case is that the report contained inaccuracies.
But it was claimed this week that two senior officers, Assistant Chief Constables Alan McQuillan and Sam Kincaid made affidavits that are said to contradict pan of a third sworn statement by former Special Branch chief Raymond White, who has since retired.
The issue of who had command of the Omagh investigation is thought to be the main area of dispute.
Mr McQuillan took command of the police region covering Omagh after the 1998 bomb blast Mr Kincaid now fills that post.
However, the statements also challenges the accuracy of a paragraph in the formal response by the PSNI to the Ombudsman's report.
A spokesman for the Police Service said the affidavits had been made by the two top officers in a personal capacity.
