Relatives to meet Home Secretary
RELATIVES of many of those who died in the Omagh bombing will meet David Blunkett, the Home Secretary, next month.
A meeting has been set up for May 8, Mr Michael Gallagher said this week.
He said the families regarded the meeting as a vital one.
Apart from meeting with Tony Blair soon after the attack, Mr Blunkett was the most senior politician the campaigners will have been met. They will be pressing him for changes in anti-terror legislation, Mr Gallagher said.
In particular they want Mr Blunkett to ban the Real IRA, the organisation that carried out the attack.
In the wake of the September 11 attacks in the USA the Real IRA was among the groups outlawed by the State Department.
However, although the British Government also introduced new legislation, it has not yet banned the Real IRA.
Mr Gallagher said the Government had announced a tough stand against international terrorism, but the threat of terrorism that most people in Britain and Ireland would encounter was posed by organisations like the Real IRA.
