Informer hands over tapes to police Ombudsman's office
THE informer, who claimed he passed on information in advance of the Omagh bomb attack, has handed over tapes of conversations with handlers to the Police Ombudsman.
'Kevin Fulton' has claimed that he told his RUC handlers that 'something big' was in the offing several days before the August 1998 attack. He did not specifically claim the target was Omagh.
Fulton's claims were published in a Sunday newspaper, and sparked off the controversial review of the bomb investigation by the Ombudsman's office.
Now Fulton has given tapes he made to a senior investigator from the Ombudsman's office.
The Police Ombudsman's office has confirmed that material alleging police misconduct had been received.
Meanwhile, Fulton has been granted leave to apply for a judicial review of a decision by the Chief Constable to refuse him a firearms certificate.
The High Court in Belfast was told police had informed Fulton there had been fresh threats to his life, and these were assessed as serious.
Counsel for Fulton, Seamus Treacy QC, accused the police of undue delay in processing the application for a gun licence.
He said it was believed there was a considerable degree of animosity towards Fulton, with the Chief Constable having made certain remarks about him.
However, counsel for the Chief Constable denied there was any undue delay, and said inquiries were continuing.
Mr. Justice Kerr granted the application for a judicial review, which is likely to be fixed for hearing next month.
