Policing Board decisions had 'broken new' ground
THE decisions taken by the Policing Board had "broken new ground" in police accountability, Mr. Alex Attwood, an SDLP appointee, said.
The moves would ensure the highest standards in the inquiry, and build public confidence in policing generally, he said.
"It enables new opportunities to track and put on trial the Omagh bombers," he said.
The Board's decisions represented the best chance of prosecuting the bombers, Mr. Attwood went on.
And he said the appointment of two high-ranking outside officers, one by the Policing Board and one by the PSNI, were far-reaching mechanisms to reshape the bomb investigation.
"The police will now be held to account and be judged against vigorous standards by the new officers and structures to be put in place.
"The McVicker Report is the standard against which he Omagh murder inquiry will be conducted and judged, and the external senior officer from outside the PSNI has extensive powers and an equal standing to those of the local investigations officers.
"This is no advisory role this is a central and critical role in the leadership of the Omagh inquiry," Mr. Attwood said.
