Policing Board will take 'robust' approach to Omagh bomb report - Byrne
THE Northern Ireland Policing Board is determined to act quickly and take a firm and robust approach to the 'robust' approach to the Police Ombudsman's report into the Omagh bombing, one of its members, West Tyrone Assemblyman Mr. Joe Byrne, has said.
After a meeting of the Policing Board's corporate policy committee in late December, it was agreed that the facts of the report would be examined in a series of meetings during January.
Mr. Byrne said: "This decision by the Policing Board to hold a series of meetings with all parties in January, affected by the Ombudsman's report, demonstrates that the board is determined to act quickly and take a firm and robust approach to the report's implications."
"The Policing Board has been very mindful of the pain and trauma that is still felt as a result of the Omagh bomb. The people of Omagh and the wider Northern Ireland community need to be reassured that lessons have been learned by the Police Service and that the necessary procedures will be put in place, which will improve the overall effectiveness of the Police Service," he said.
Concluding, Mr. Byrne said: "We must always remember that the Omagh bomb was an evil act of terrorism, planned and executed by dissident republicans, intent on causing death and destruction in an attempt to derail the peace process against the democratic wishes of the majority of the people of Ireland."
