Omagh delegation get warm welcome in Warrington
AN OMAGH District Council delegation visited Warrington as guests of Warrington Borough Council and The Bridge, a group whose objective is to promote peace and reconciliation in Ireland through cultural links.
The weekend was part of an ongoing programme of exchange visits between the two towns which has developed since the Omagh bombing of 1998.
Chairman of Omagh District Council, Mr. Barry McElduff, was accompanied by council member, Mr. Allan Rainey, Mr. Danny McSorley, chief executive of the council and Mr. Frank Sweeney, head of arts and tourism.
The climax to the weekend programme of activities was the "Advent... A New Beginning" gala concert held in Warrington Town Hall.
Participating in the concert, which was hosted by Belfast-born presenter Gordon Burns, were members of Omagh Traditional Dance Group and Omagh Community Youth Choir.
Others who travelled to Warrington for the weekend visit included Mr. Martin McGuinness, Minister for Education and representatives from Cork, with whom Warrington has formed economic links.
Commenting on the visit, Mr. McElduff said: "We were delighted to accept the invitation from Warrington and welcomed the opportunity of joining with Minister McGuinness and our friends from Cork and Omagh in the weekend programme of activities, especially the Advent Programme. It was particularly encouraging to see the Omagh Traditional Dance Group and Omagh Community Youth Choir entertaining the people of Warrington and their guests as part of these celebrations.
"I congratulate the two groups on their excellent performances and would also wish to acknowledge the peace poetry writing contributions of our local schools with a large number of entries of very high standard. I want to mention, in particular, two local school pupils, namely Patrick McDonagh from the Christian Brothers Grammar School and Scott Rankin from Drumragh Integrated School. Both pupils demonstrated vision and creativity in their writing and I congratulate them on that" he said.
A peace march, which is being planned by members of the Warrington community, will visit Omagh in May 2002. Following on from that, a delegation from Warrington will visit Omagh next December 9.
