DOHERTY CALLS FOR FULL INDEPENDENT INQUIRY
Doherty calls for full independent inquiry
WEST TYRONE MP, Mr. Pat Doherty, has called for an urgent meeting with the Secretary of State to demand the full disclosure of all information on what the Special Branch knew before the August 15 Omagh bombing.
And he said that a fully independent inquiry was the only means of ensuring that the truth came out.
Mr. Doherty visited Omagh on Friday and was in the town again yesterday.
He said many people in the town were in a state of shock.
"These latest revelations have compounded the hurt and suffering that has been caused to the relatives and survivors of the Omagh bomb. The first priority must be to ensure that they are not left in the dark about the extent of prior knowledge withheld by the RUC Special Branch.
"The community is in the process of rebuilding. What they do not need is uncertainty and untruths to complicate' the healing process."
Mr. Doherty said he believed that the Secretary of State had "closed ranks" with the Chief Constable to protect the interests of Special Branch.
"It is now abundantly clear that only a fully independent inquiry into the activities of the Special Branch and their masters, in the British intelligence services will get at the truth," Mr Doherty said.
