LIBRARY STAFF APPLAUDED BY EDUCATION CHIEF

Library staff applauded by education chief

THE chief executive of the Western Education and Library Board, Mr. Joseph Martin, has praised the staff of Omagh library involved in producing the CD Rom on the Omagh bomb and its aftermath.
Said Mr. Martin at the launch: "The project involved a lot of intensive, stressful and sensitive work. I personally do not know of any local library authority that has attempted to create a searchable information database on CD Rom.
"It took a lot of hard work and co-operation to make but it will prove invaluable not just to the library service, but to all those who will use it in the years ahead."
Mr. Martin said that remembrance was important in all creeds and cultures.
"It is part of the healing process and we must never forget. The production of this archive material ensures that there will always be tangible remembrance of that terrible day in August 1998 and that the sympathy of the world and the kindness of so many people in the days and months afterwards will be recorded for future generations," Mr. Martin said.
He thanked all those who were involved in the collation of the archive and in the production of the CD Rom, and paid special tribute to the library staff of the Western Education and Library Board who, he said, took the initiative in establishing the archive.
"I also want to thank very specially Sperrin Lakeland Health Trust who released a member of staff, Peter Cummings, one day a week to work with the Board's library staff on the production of the CD Rom.
"I hope that the partnership will continue to enable the Archive to reflect and disseminate the knowledge and expertise gained in coping with the aftermath of such a tragedy.
"I also wish to thank Omagh District Council for its continued co-operation, and Western Connect who released two students for a three-month placement with the project and finally I wish to express my appreciation to the Department of Education, who were particularly generous in providing funding," said Mr. Martin.
