Protection sought
REPRESENTATIVES of bereaved families met with the local police chief in Omagh on Monday to discuss increased protective measures for the
memorial garden in the future.
Mr. Michael Gallagher, chairman of the Omagh Self Help and Support Group, said the meeting with Supt. James Baxter had proved useful.
But he also said he was disappointed that the chief executive of the local council, Mr. Danny McSorley, was unable to be present, although he had said he could meet them later in the week.
"However, we felt that we had to have the meeting as soon as possible," said Mr. Gallagher.
Mr. Gallagher said it was hoped that an extra CCTV camera could be erected to cover the area. The group would seek funding through the Secretary of State, Dr. John Reid, from the Victims' Fund so as not to further burden the taxpayers or local traders.
Provision of better lighting and some form of hedging around the rear of the garden were also discussed.
In a statement issued yesterday Mr. McSorley said that while fully appreciating the distress caused to families by last week's act of vandalism, he had not been in a position to meet with representatives of the group due to heavy diary commitments. He said he did, however, attempt to facilitate the group by offering a number of alternative dates.
