MEMORIAL FUND TO BENEFIT FROM PEACE AWARD

Memorial fund to benefit from peace award

AN INTERNATIONAL peace award of 10,000, which was presented in Italy at the weekend, is to go to the Omagh Memorial Fund.
The Viareggio Versillia Award was made to the Secretary of State, Dr. Mo Mowlam, for important activity regarding peace among people. It was collected on her behalf by the Political Development Minister, Mr. Paul Murphy.
He said that political progress could not have been achieved without the determination of the British Government and the political representatives of Northern Ireland.
Mr. Murphy added: "Two weeks ago, the small town of Omagh was torn apart by a senseless and barbaric bombing, and unspeakable evil. We intend that this award will be donated to the victims of Omagh."
The Minister received a presentation cheque, and the Northern Ireland Office has said arrangements would be made to meet trustees of the memorial fund to hand over the money.
