Scheme for unemployed boosts job skills and helps Omagh fund
FOURTEEN unemployed young people from the Omagh area are currently taking part in the Prince's Trust Volunteers programme, gaining skills for employment and raising money for the Omagh Fund.
The programme has been delivered by the Western Education and Library Board in Omagh, Enniskillen, Limavady and Strabane since 1994.
And, in September, the Board appointed a team leader for a peripatetic programme, in order to take the scheme to the young people.
The first of these is based in Omagh, in response to the August bomb, where many young people were killed or injured.
Beginning last month, the programme is run from the Focus Centre in Sedan Avenue, and the 14 young people taking part come from a wide area, including Omagh, Beragh, Castlederg and Eskra.
Team leader is Declan McAleer, and assistant team leader is Conor Martin.
The team-building residential was held at YMCA in Newcastle, where the young people undertook many challenging activities, including rock-climbing, Canadian canoeing, nightline, low ropes course, aerial runway, bouldering, archery and orienteering.
They have also completed two community projects locally. The first was a travelling Christmas Show, which was performed in Heatherbank School, Cranny School, and Omagh Integrated and St. Oliver Plunkett primary 'schools, as well as the children's ward at Tyrone County Hospital and Camphill Community, Clanbogan.
The second project involved the preparation of about 1,500 candles for the vigil and carol service in Omagh on Sunday.
The young people have nominated the Omagh Fund as their specific charity, and are organising and planning fund-raising activities. They are also gaining work experience with a wide range of organisations, including the Integrated Primary School, Heatherbank School, Omagh District Council, the Western Education and Library Board, YMCA and Eskra Primary School.
A spokesman for the scheme said: "The aim of the programme is to help young people gain skills and experiences, such as teamwork, communication, confidence and motivation which will assist them to gain employment, further education, training or voluntary work."
Throughout the programme, those taking part will work towards NVQ Keyskills, a City and Guilds profile of achievement and a first aid certificate.
