LIGHT OUT OF DARKNESS DESIGN WINS AWARD FOR HEATHERBANK PUPIL
Light out of Darkness' design wins award for Heatherbank pupil
A PUPIL at Heatherbank School, Omagh, designed the winning Christmas card in an art competition organised by the Western Education and Library Board (WELB).
Kieran McElhill's design, with the theme of 'Out Of Darkness Came Light', was considered most appropriate for the WELB's official Christmas card.
The winning design depicts a view of Kevlin Road, Omagh, with three burning candles in the background to represent the spires of churches in the area.
The judges were so impressed by Kieran's sensitive interpretation of the theme that they intend to produce a print of his original design, copies of which will be sold in aid of the Omagh Fund.
Because of the extremely high quality of the entries, the judges also chose a further six cards which are being sold in packs, in aid of the Omagh Fund.
The following pupils' work was selected for the pack of six: Alan Heaney, Gibson Primary School; Emma Pinkerton, Dunmullan Primary School; Stephanie McDermott, St Mary's Primary School, Killyclogher; Thomas Brown, Heatherbank School; Emma Kelly, Loreto Convent Grammar School, and Rachel Rennie, Omagh Academy.
All of the card designs entered in the competition were exhibited in the WELB's boardroom during the recent education committee meeting, where members were extremely impressed with the levels of creativity on display.
Mr Joe Martin, chief executive of the WELB, and Mrs Shiela McCaul, senior education officer, congratulated all involved and paid tribute to the teachers and pupils who supported the initiative.
