Give a day to Omagh' Campaign provides boost
THE President of the Irish Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and 110 members of the Malahide Chamber, 'gave a day to Omagh' on Friday.
Mr Philip O'Reilly and his Dublin colleagues supported their Omagh counterparts by visiting local shops, cafes and restaurants during their one-day tour of the town.
The 'Give A Day To Omagh' campaign was launched by the UTV broadcaster, Mr Gerry Kelly, in the Europa Bus Centre, Belfast, last month.
The joint initiative between the Omagh Chamber of Commerce and the Omagh Traders' Association, is an open invitation to people to spend a day in the town centre.
Badges and car stickers have been produced for visitors who patronise local shops and businesses, with contributions going to the Omagh Fund.
Some people have been uncomfortable with the idea of shopping in Omagh since the bomb of August 15, and the objective of the 'Give A Day To Omagh' campaign is to reverse this trend.
Mr Nicholas O'Shiel, development director of Omagh Chamber of Commerce, said the campaign had been a great success.
He said they had received inquiries from many Chambers of Commerce, including Shannon and Galway.
"We have received very positive feedback from local traders, reporting that they served many visiting individuals and groups. Numbers shopping in the town are up, and we feel that the campaign is helping," said Mr O'Shiel.
Mr Patrick Bogues, a representative of the Omagh Traders Association, said it was important that people make an effort to reclaim the town centre.
"Following the bomb, the trading community in Omagh has been severely hit due to the sheer size and scale of the atrocity," he said.
"People can help those who live in Omagh by simply coming and visiting the town, even for just one day."
Mr Michael Gaine, president of the Omagh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the people of the town needed support, particularly during the festive period.
"The rebuilding of Omagh cannot be done by one business alone, but must be tackled by the town as a whole, acting together under the leadership of the main business organisations and the goodwill that exists for the people of the town," he said.
Meanwhile, the Donegal Town Development Association will be giving a day to Omagh tomorrow (Friday).
The trip has been organised by Mrs Dee Crossan, originally from Omagh, and a close friend of Mr and Mrs Art Kelly, of Kellys Chemist.
Accompanying the Donegal Town Development Association will be the Donegal Youth Band, who will entertain shoppers with their music.
