CALL FOR WAIVING OF PARKING FEES

CALL FOR WAIVING OF PARKING FEES

Sir,
I have discussed the car parking situation in Omagh town with local traders.
I have noted that although there is general acceptance of the recent tightening up in enforcement in the Pay and Display car parks, the timing of the introduction of this is unfortunate in Omagh's current circumstances which have seen the town centre effectively closed to traffic for several months and the downturn in trade which the town has suffered.
In addition the existing and new shopping provision on the outskirts of the town centre with extensive free parking facilities leaves the town centre, with its severe parking restrictions, at a great disadvantage.
Christmas in Omagh this year is being emphasised by the Give A Day to Omagh initiative which will raise morale and bring back a sense of normality to the community.
This initiative is being supported by business, church and community groups who will welcome the many visitors and well-wishers who will come to Omagh to support the Give A Day To Omagh campaign.
I would call upon the DOE Roads Service to do their bit and join with the rest of the community in the Give A day To Omagh initiative by waiving their car parking rules and fees in the run up to Christmas Day.
Yours,
Gerry O'Doherty
SDLP.

Constituency secretary
