Challenge game aids Omagh Fund
OMAGH District Council chairman, Sean Clarke and SDLP Councillor, Pat McDonnell, were among the sizeable attendance at Sunday's challenge game between All-Ireland champions, Galway and Roscommon in aid of the Omagh Bomb Fund.
A repeat of this year's Connaught final, the match saw Roscommon avenge their defeat in' the provincial final by emerging narrow winners on a score of 2-9 to 0-14.
Both teams fielded several of their championship fifteens and a first half goal from Tommy Grehen earned Roscommon an interval lead. A second goal from Frankie Boyle just after half-time extended their advantage to 2-8 to, 0-6, but their hopes of finishing comfortable winners did not materialise.
A Galway comeback spearheaded by footballer of the year Jarlath Fallen and John Donnellan saw the Sam Maguire Cup winners reduce the deficit to just one point before Roscommon held on for victory.
The Roscommon County Secretary, Tom Mullany, said both teams had provided a competitive and highly entertaining encounter.
"There were a number of other attractions throughout Connaught on Sunday, but we were very pleased with the attendance and the amount of money raised for the bomb fund," he said.
