INTERNATIONAL HEALING HELP FOR OMAGH

International healing help for Omagh

INTERNATIONALLY renowned expert in mediation and conflict transformation, Professor John Paul Lederach, has visited Omagh.
Recognised as a guru of community healing worldwide, he spoke to community and voluntary workers, local students and representatives from churches in the area. The unfortunate, but essential subject of his talk was the healing process they must now begin in the wake of the August atrocity.
Drawing on experience gained in conflict situations in Latin America, Cambodia and Somalia his solutions focus on the fact that cultures hold the key to peace. This consensual approach has proved popular, and he is currently in great demand around the globe.
Christine Nesbitt, Omagh District Council, organiser of the Omagh leg of Professor Lederach's visit, said that his talk was "extremely enriching."
She added: "Professor Lederach posed many questions about community recovery as a whole and its benefits over such individualistic methods as counselling. His view was that we should set out a plan to follow during our recovery much like the way you have a plan when you are building a house. You need a target to focus your recovery. He certainly started what can only be a useful thought process, making us look to a future vision and giving us a goal to hit."
