Members and friends of Omagh Floral Art Society were warmly welcomed to the open meeting in the Silverbirch Hotel by the chairman, Mrs. Breige Kelly.
The audience was captivated by the skill and artistry of the demonstrator, Mrs. Joan Lockhart, a qualified area demonstrator and teacher of floral art.
Taking as her theme "A Touch of Green Magic", she produced a number of colourful arrangements to show that 'we are dependent on nature for our food, clothes and life itself'.
A flat tray was used to hold a continental style exhibit using the foliage of jasmine,euonymus and photinia.
Bunches of dried wheat and orange gladioli gave height and in between were yellow chrysanthemums, solidago and ornamental cabbage. This was set on a wooden crate draped with hessian and complemented with a large crockery jar and fruit.
Referring to the recent tragic event in Omagh Mrs. Lockhart created a green and white triangular arrangement in a large urn. Against a background of vine foliage, phorinium spears and bergenia leaves she arranged white "emerald" roses, pom-pom chrysanthemums and star gazer lilies. This was placed on a pillar draped with green velvet. She dedicated this to all the people who have suffered in Omagh and in Northern Ireland as a whole.
Mrs. Harron thanked Mrs. Lockhart for an inspiring demonstration.
After the draw for the exhibits Mrs. Kelly reminded members about two meetings in November, the annual meeting and the demonstration by the Rev. William McMillan in aid of the Omagh Memorial Fund.
