SINGING STAR DANIEL TO SWITCH ON OMAGH'S FESTIVE LIGHTS
Singing star Daniel to switch on Omagh's festive lights
DONEGAL singing sensation, Daniel O'Donnell, will be turning on Omagh's Christmas lights on November 26.
The country star's appearance was confirmed this week by the chairman of Omagh Traders' Association, Mr. Roy Alien, who said he had no doubt the singer would get a warm welcome from local people.
"Daniel O'Donnell will be welcomed with open arms. We see this as an honour that he would come to Omagh to switch on our lights this year, and he will be sending out a positive message from the town," Mr. Alien said.
"Omagh has been recognised for all the wrong reasons, and hopefully Daniel will be seen as an ambassador for the local people, as we try to get back to some form of normality."
The lights in the town this year will differ from previous years, Mr. Alien explained.
"We will be having laser lights in High Street and Market Street, which will look like moving picture in the sky, such as Santa Claus, reindeers and other Christmas scenes he said.
He explained that the lights would be beamed off two six feet screens, erected above the street between Boots and the Shopper's Rest, and between the Northern Bank and the Sewing Basket.
Around 70 small Christmas trees with white lights will be erected on premises throughout the centre, including the bombed area of lower Market Street, and down through Campsie. Bridge Street and Scarffe's Entry will also be 'lit up'.
While all the plans have not yet been finalised, Mr. Alien said it was hoped that Christmas scenes would be painted on the hoardings erected in lower Market Street.
He added that local school children may be asked to take part in the painting of the murals.
Commenting on the programme of events planned for the 'switch-on'. Mr. Alien said a short interdenominational prayer service would be held, along with carol-singing from choirs.
Local DJ, Pio McCann, will be compering the evening, and the Chevvys and Rock Stewart will also be taking to the stage, among a number of other festive activities.
The Traders' Association draw for the two V1P tickets to New York, donated by Aer Lingus through the Crossroads and Killygordon Omagh Fund Committee, and six nights free accommodation, courtesy of the Radisson hotel group, will be held on the night.
Meanwhile, Omagh District Council is to allocate a total of �7.185 for Christmas lights in villages throughout the district.
