AMERICAN TOURING SIDE AMONG ACCIES PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY
American touring side among Accies pre-season friendly line up
OMAGH Academicals Rugby Club will have a series of friendlies in the build up to the start of their Ulster Senior League season, the highlight being a game against American side, Chicago Lions.
That game against the American tourists is not until October, and will in fact complete their pre-season friendlies before the Senior Two League season opens with a home game against Banbridge.
This Saturday Omagh were due to have been involved in the special training friendly with Dungannon, but it has been cancelled as a mark of respect given that it is the first anniversary weekend of the Omagh bomb.
Armagh will provide the opposition on Saturday, August 21 (away), which will give coach, Alastair Brown, his first real opportunity to see what he will have in the ranks this season, bearing in mind that as well as the Ulster League series, there is also a difficult All Ireland League Four campaign ahead.
He has been somewhat disappointed at the small turnout at training sessions, but is aware that several people are still on holidays.
Next on the agenda is a special friendly against former AIL4 side, CIYMS (home) on August 28, which will also involve Southern side, Malahide, who made their first visit to Omagh for the sevens this year.
Meanwhile, the other teams remain free during August, but new seconds captain, Colin McCaffrey, would be keen to see as many as possible of the second string getting a run out before they open their season with a difficult Ulster Junior Cup first round tie away to arch rivals,
Banbridge IIs.
The seconds will continue to play in the Ulster 2nd XV League, although there is only one section this season.
Omagh thirds have been moved up to section three of the Junior League and new captain, Glen Patterson, is also appealing for players to attend training in preparation for what could be a difficult season ahead at the new level.
Omagh fourths will continue to play in the Intermediate League with the fifths remaining the Minor League ranks.
