THE British Association of Social Workers, North West branch, has extended its sympathy and support to those bereaved by the Omagh bomb a year ago.
The organisation said that many of its members were involved in working with survivors and relatives in the aftermath of the bombing, and had great admiration for the way in which the community had pulled together to enable people to make progress.
A spokesperson said the essence of social work was to build on the strengths and coping mechanisms that people already had, and to channel and direct those in a way which would support people to move forward at their own pace.
The spokesperson said the branch had been deeply impressed by the energy and resourcefulness of the local community.
"While many problems and much suffering remains, there are also many stories of hope, and a determination to rise above the tragedy.
"These serve as a great example to those of us who work day and daily with the less advantaged, the ill and the needy in our society. It is a reminder of what can be achieved when the spirit and will of a people refuse to be beaten," the spokesperson said.
