Your suffering will not be forgotten, says PM
THE Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, has offered his support to the people of Omagh, and has assured those affected by the bomb that that their suffering will not be forgotten.
In a letter to the district council's chief executive, Mr. John McKinney, on Tuesday, Mr. Blair paid tribute to the courage, strength and dignity shown by the bereaved and injured in facing the future.
Commenting on the anniversary weekend, he said: "It is, I am sure, with heavy hearts that your community faces the forthcoming weekend, when all will remember the horror of the appalling atrocity on 15 August last year, which brought such heartache into the homes of Omagh and its surrounding villages, and of Buncrana and Spain.
"The consequences of that day are, I know, impossible to define in human terms. Countless families have been torn apart; countless lives have been needlessly shattered."
Mr. Blair went on to acknowledge all those who had taken part in the "colossal effort of relief and support" in response to the tragedy. Their tremendous work had been deeply appreciated, he said.
"The whole community in Northern Ireland, and indeed, across the world, has felt moved to reach out to those affected by the bombing in Omagh. The pain for many is as yet undiminished, but I assure them that their suffering will not be forgotten," he said.
"I wish for all of the community in Omagh and beyond, the strength and courage to continue with their already remarkable efforts to rebuild their lives and their community."
