PRAISE FOR DARTS FRATERNITY

It was my pleasure and privilege to render some small assistance last weekend to a memorable venture which took place in Irvinestown.
Darts enthusiasts from all over these islands gathered to compete in a special invitation tournament.
The event was staged in the spacious and homely environs of Mahon's Hotel. Not being a darts afficianado, I travelled to Irvinestown with some curiosity.
I must report that I returned home greatly heartened by the warmth and humanity 1 encountered among the darts fraternity.
All profits from the event were being donated to the Omagh Fund and I heard disgust and revulsion for the August 15 atrocity expressed with great sincerity in a wide range of accents.
No matter how many such events I attend, I am constantly overwhelmed at the compassion I find for the suffering of Omagh. It seems as if the millions of decent, inoffensive folk are seeking to wash away that evil act in a sea of goodness.
The darts event, which featured no less than eight of the world's top players, was an outstanding success, and indeed, may become an annual event. When all expenses had been paid and generous prizes awarded, there was still a sum of �2,500 available for the Omagh Fund.
Our thanks are due to the generous sponsors, including the affable Joe Mahon, who was a splendid host. Particular tribute must be paid to the organiser-in-chief, Ronnie Boyle, who carried out his heavy duties with style and unfailing good humour. Nor can we forget the redoubtable Pat Joe McCusker, who ferried his famous guests to and from the airport, in the process becoming an instant legend in darts circles.
