Church Moderator's sympathy
Sir,
As Moderator of the Non Subscribing Presbyterian Church of Ireland, I extend to you and your town the profound sympathy of all our members and our deep sense of outrage and shock of the terrible act of atrocity perpetrated upon you on Saturday August 15.
While few towns in Northern Ireland have totally escaped death and destruction in the last 30 years, to you has fallen the burden of paying the heaviest price of all, in terms of suffering and loss of life. Our denomination does not have churches in your area, but we do have members living in Omagh who travel to services elsewhere. The organist of my Cairncastle congregation travels from Omagh every Sunday and some of our folk do business with retailers in the town.
We realise that words at this time seem totally inadequate - and may not even register at all with those who suffered the most, but, for many of us words are all we have. We pray that God. in time, will grant your people, and those victims who were visiting Omagh on that tragic day, some kind of healing or, at least, some easing of the terrible wounds of body, mind and soul; we pray that those who perpetrated this crime, whoever they are, will be brought speedily to justice and experience the full weight of universal contempt and condemnation due to them for what they have done to you.
