FITNESS TELLS AS VALLEY ROMP TO WIN
PLAYING their first game back on home soil, Clogher Valley opened their Ulster season with a friendly against Omagh Academicals seconds and romped to a 48-19 win.
Coming off their South African tour, the Valley lads showed a higher level of fitness and discipline and opened their account early on through an Alistair Breen try. Captain, Steven Bothwell, then got a second try when he showed a good turn of pace.
The lead was stretched to 19 points when Breen, as confident as ever, added a third try with a great counter attack.
Philip Falconer scored the last try before the interval from a ball kicked to the Omagh '22', which he won in the loose. Despite three men outside him screaming for the pass, he used his physical presence and touched down under the posts. Bothwell added his third conversion.
Omagh replied with a try to leave the interval score 29-5 in Clogher's command.
Falconer opened the scoring in the second half with a try which showed how high his confidence is running.
The Valley forwards, in particular the back row of Williamson, Wilson and Lyons, were producing good ball which was moved swiftly to Falconer, who showed his opposite number the ball before stepping inside him to go untouched under the posts. Russell Robinson scored an action replay of Flaconer's try, which was converted by Bothwell.
Omagh re-grouped in the second period, fighting back with two converted tries.
However, it was the Valley who had the final say with Jason Allen, having moved to the wing, running in the last try to leave the final score 48-19.
A sterner test lies in front of Steven Bothwell and his troops this Saturday when they entertain Enniskillen at Bohatten Lane. It is the last of the friendlies before the Junior Cup and Qualifying League Two campaigns begin.
Prior to the match, both teams observed a moment's silence as a mark of sympathy to the Omagh bomb victims.
