HOPEFULLY the evil manifested in Omagh and the slaughter of the innocents will become an incentive for people to work towards peace, a Methodist spokesman said on Wednesday following the funeral of Mrs. Olive Hawkes.
Family and friends gathered in the home of the 60-year-old farmer's wife at Fecarry, Omagh, for a short service before the funeral service in Mayne Methodist Church where Mrs. Hawkes had been treasurer for 20 years.
Sadness was etched on the faces of the mourners as they made their way towards the church - a scene which had been enacted at earlier funerals, and was to be repeated at the many others.
The service was conducted by Rev. Kenneth Robinson, minister at Sydenham, Belfast, who was related to Mrs. Hawkes by marriage. The President of the Methodist Church, Rev. David Kerr, was also present.
Mrs. Hawkes was buried in the graveyard of Cappagh Parish Church.
After the service Mr. Robinson said that the family connection had made his sad task all the more difficult.
"She was the sort of person who would do anything for anyone. A person who would drop everything and run to help anyone who needed it," he said.
He said the funeral of someone who lived a full life was distressing, but the circumstances "not only of Olive's passing, but of so many others were killed just made it that much more difficult."
Speaking after the service the Methodist spokesman said: "Hopefully the evil manifested at the weekend in Omagh and the slaughter of the innocents will become an incentive for people to work towards peace.
"As Christians we will be praying for those who are injured and critically ill and those who have lost loved ones. Grief knows no denominational boundaries."
