COMMUNITY NEEDS TO TREAD GENTLY
Community needs to 'tread gently'
THOSE who died as a result of the Omagh bomb blast must be remembered in a fitting way, and their families must be helped to cope with their bereavement, West Tyrone Sinn Fein Assemblymen, Mr. Barry McElduff and Mr. Pat Doherty, said.
They said that all within the local community needed to tread gently in the coming weeks and months.
"Omagh is indeed changed utterly. In so many ways there is a long road ahead, and people's hearts will continue to bleed for a long time," they said.
Continued the Assemblymen: "With the deceased now laid to rest, we must all now honour their memory as fittingly as is possible, and we must ensure that their families are helped in every conceivable way to cope with their bereavement.
"The good people who have been traumatised, injured and maimed will need all kind of practical assistance. Everyone is attempting to come to terms with this new, terrible, situation, but it will not be easy.
"As for those who placed the bomb in Omagh, we want to state that the peace process, indeed Sinn Fein's peace strategy, was the target in the same was as the town of Omagh itself.
"They have attempted to wreck the process, and we must all ensure that their objective is subverted. It was humbling to hear so many of the bereaved articulating by word and deed their deepest desire to see the further development and success of the peace initiative. They have pointed the way for us."
