PEOPLE CRAVING FOR PEACE
FOLLOWING the Omagh bomb atrocity, the main thrust for political parties and the Government in Northern Ireland must be towards decommissioning, Fermanagh Assembly member, Mr. Sam Foster, said this week.
He said that if elected representatives in the Assembly were, as they suggested, working actively for a lasting peace, then they must agree that total disarmament of all paramilitary organisations was required immediately.
"Contrary to the fears of some in the republican movement, decommissioning will not hinder the search for a lasting peace. Peace can only be attained, and given permanence, when decommissioning is implemented," said Mr. Foster.
He said that for some of the republican movement to unequivocally condemn the slaughter of the innocent in Omagh while continuing to fudge on the issue of disarmament was ludicrous and hypocritical.
Said Mr. Foster: "It now rests with the elected representatives of IRA/Sinn Fein to match their condemnation with positive action. As a mark of respect for those who have been murdered by terrorists over the years, decommissioning is of the essence, and must come now.
"Peace is what the people want and crave for. Such desired peace will come when decommissioning is activated," he added.
