RED CROSS AWARD FOR 'OUTSTANDING COURAGE' OF THE PEOPLE OF OMAGH
Red Cross award for 'outstanding courage'of the people of Omagh
THE Red Cross 'Care in Crisis', regional award, which is normally presented to an individual, this year went to the people of Omagh in recognition of their outstanding 'courage, in the aftermath of the Market Street bombing of August 15.
Representatives of all the different agencies who were involved in the response to the bombing attended the, ceremony in Duke's' Hotel, Belfast, on Friday last.
The award was accepted on the town's behalf by local councillors , Liam McQuaid and Oliver Gibson, Dr Peter Garrett and Sister Bridie McMenamin from the Tyrone County Hospital, and Marion, McGale, social worker with the Sperrin Lakeland Trust.
And special certificates of commendation went to 16 Red Cross volunteers, who worked tirelessly throughout the days following the atrocity.
Meanwhlle, David Bolton director of community care with the Sperrin Lakeland Trust, John McKinney, chief-executive with Omagh District Council; and Sister Gwyneth Henry, from the Tyrone County Hospital, are set to travel to London on November 1, to receive a national award for the town.
