Bomb car number plate found intact in rubble
THE local RUC sub-divisional commander, Superintendent James Baxter, has made a further appeal for information about the Omagh bombing.
And it has been revealed this week that the number plate of the Vauxhall Cavalier car containing the 5001b bomb was found intact in the rubble.
A police spokesman said forensic tests had already been carried out on it, but they were anxious to hear from anyone who saw the car, registration number MDZ 5211, in Omagh or elsewhere.
He said police were investigating a number of possibilities as to the movements of the vehicle, after it was stolen on August 13 in Carrickmacross. At some stage before the bombing it may have been in South Armagh, he said.
The original registration number of the vehicle, 91 DL 2554, was removed by the bombers, and the car was packed with home-made explosives, created from fuel oil and fertiliser, before being left at Market Street.
Police are also seeking information about two men, who were seen walking away from the car after it was parked.
Speaking on Tuesday, Supt. Baxter said the response so far from the public to the police inquiry had been good, and he hoped that would continue.
Urging people to come forward to assist the police in the investigation, he said: "No piece of information is too small - it could be vital."
Meanwhile, the five men arrested by the RUC following the bombing have all been released without charge. Three were released on Thursday night, while the remaining two were released at the weekend.
