Queen to attend memorial service
THE Downing Street press office has confirmed that the Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, will attend a memorial service for the victims of the Omagh bombing, to be led by the Queen.
Speaking to Tyrone Constitution from Downing Street on Monday, Mr. Lance Price, said: "The service will definitely take place. It is very much up to the people on the ground when."
Mr. Price said the venue had yet to be decided upon, and added that local officials would have to work out a suitable and convenient date, and submit it for ratification.
Plans for the service were announced last week, and it is expected the Queen will be accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.
A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said the Queen realised the people of Omagh needed time to grieve in peace.
"She will be attending the service when it is organised in due course," he added.
In addition to Mr. Blair, Downing Street said Irish President, Mary McAleese, Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, and Spanish Prime Minister, Jose-Maria Aznar, would also be invited to attend.
A No. 10 spokesman said Mr. Blair believed the wishes of the relatives of the victims should be "paramount", and therefore the timing, location and form of the service would be decided upon in consultation with them.
