COUNCILLOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO POLICE
A MEMBER of Omagh District Council, Mr. Oliver Gibson, has paid tribute to the local police force for the "magnificent manner" in which they dealt with the aftermath of the bombing.
In a letter sent to, among others, the Secretary of State and the RUC Chief Constable, Mr. Gibson said he felt "genuinely compelled" to convey on behalf of the people of the area their sincere thanks to the police.
"The unprecedented atrocity in our county town of Omagh called upon the reserves of resourcefulness very far beyond the call of duty," he said.
And he added that their response had saved many lives.
Mr. Gibson went on to say that, over the years, he had had many opportunities to compare the RUC with other world and city constabularies.
"None that I saw or evidenced could compare with the RUC. Any nation would be very proud of such a constabulary," he said.
"On the 15th August and since, the RUC has risen far beyond the standards and norms of the world's best."
He went on to add his own personal thanks to the police, for their "courtesy, kindness and gentle decorum at a time of great stress".
