Blood Transfusion Service appeal
THE Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service has commended staff who cut short their holidays to man donation sessions.
Mr. Paul McElkerney, donor recruitment and organisation manager, said the Omagh team responded very well.
"Many of them came into work from their holidays. We had an overwhelming response from members of the public to give blood and extra staff was needed to cope with that,'" he said.
Mr. McElkerney said the Blood Transfusion Service was fortunate in that it had enough stocks at the weekend, and were able to respond to demand from all the hospitals.
"There is no doubt that anyone who has given blood has saved lives. Without it more lives would been lost," he said.
"As a result of a special drive to give blood in June, to boost stocks during the quiet summer months, we had enough to cope with the demand after the bombing," he said.
The weekend emergency had, however, depleted stocks and he urged more donors to come forward.
"The problem now is that many of our regular donors, who have just given blood, will now be able to give blood for another 16 weeks
