KESH FESTIVAL SCALED DOWN IN WAKE OF TRAGEDY
Kesh festival scaled down in wake of tragedy
THERE was a sombre atmosphere as the Maid of Glendurragh Festival, in Kesh, got underway on Monday.
Organisers removed bunting from the village's streets as a mark of respect to those who died and were injured as a result of the bomb in Omagh on Saturday afternoon.
"The people of Kesh are very distraught and, as a mark of respect, the festival is going ahead in a limited capacity," said Mr. Neville Armstrong, secretary of Kesh Enterprise Company.
He explained that the evening fixtures had been cancelled, including the festival queen dance, It's a Knockout competition and treasure hunt, but that many of the children's events were to go ahead as planned. All the events scheduled for Saturday, were also cancelled.
He added that one minutes silence was to be observed before those events which were taking place.
A Book of Condolence has been opened at the village's community centre.
Meanwhile, the annual pet show was staged on Monday morning. The judge was Finnoula Graham of 'Paws For Thought' Grooming Services, Lisnaskea, who proved popular and patient in her adjudication.
The prestigious 'best of show' award went to 'Shadow', a black Labrador, owned by Mr. Charles Oldcroft.
The Parlour Puss Cup awarded to the best non pedigree cat: 1, 'Fluffy', owned by Kylie Beacon; 2, 'Darkie', Jane Lee; 3, 'Darkie', Ryan and Connor Docherty.
Best dog handler under-eight years old: 1', 'Sheba', West Highland Terrier, owned by Simon McAllister; 2. 'Lucky', fell terrier, Stephen Duncan; 3, 'Sheba', labrador, Sarah Beacom; Reserve. 'Cindy', Jack Russell, Katy Wray.
Best dog handler aged 8-16 years: 1, 'Jade', black labrador, Laura Marshal; 2, 'Lucy', golden retriever, Edel Amos: 3, 'Meg', golden retriever, Adam Bennet; Reserve, 'Scuffles', Tibetan terrier, Stephanie Marshal.
Best non-pedigree dog: 1. 'Juno', Hannah Baxter; 2. 'Cindy'. Nicholas Wray; 3, 'Smudge', Katy Wray.
Best small pedigree dog: 1, 'Jack', Cairn terrier, Anna Blackburn; 2, 'Zak', Samoyed, Christopher Armour; 3, 'Sally', Collie, Mellisa Jones: Reserve, 'Jess', cocker spaniel, Rachel Armstrong.
Best large pedigree dog: 1, 'Shadow', black labrador, Charles Oldcroft; 2, 'Barney', golden labrador, Tommy Johnston; 3, 'Judy', Golden Labrador, Tommy Johnston; Reserves, 'Sam', samoyed, Laura Moore, and 'Jenny', black labrador, Tommy Johnston.
