VISIT BY SPIRIT OF EVIL

Visit by 'spirit of evil'

Sir,
Through the medium of your paper I would like to address my fellow countrymen and women of the noble town of Omagh.
You have been visited in a most rapacious manner by the Spirit of Evil. The town of Omagh has been a shining example to the rest of us over these past years in the way that its citizens have put kindness and respect for each other to the forefront. And that may be the answer to the question that many of you are asking. "Why?" Because you are gracious and kind to each other, and this is not what the Spirit of Evil likes. It thrives on conflict and hate and it could not find these things in Omagh, so it tried to impose them. It wants you to be at each other's throats, but it will be disappointed. My soul is heavy as I write. So many beautiful people of all ages savagely slaughtered. So many families shattered and left to wonder what the future holds. But the families are not alone in their grief or their loss, The whole of this island has been deprived of the benefits that the dead and injured would have brought to us. I think particularly of the lovely young people who will not have the opportunity to bless us with their talents; of the young people from Spain who came here to enjoy our hospitality, in the Ireland of the Welcomes. How that title has been besmirched.
I have watched the television coverage of what happened and I have shed many tears. I have also greatly admired all those who rushed to assist the victims, particularly those who have no training but did their very best to comfort and assist. They are in glowing contrast to those who would wreck and main, and deserve our gratitude.
As to the future; I would implore you to carry on as before, don't let the Spirit of Evil impose its teachings on you. Don't put up the barriers in the mind that inflict so many other places in our fair land. Continue, please, to be an example to the rest of us.
You have my prayers and my love in these terrible times. May God bless you and keep you all in the palm of His hands.
Yours, J. J. Murphy
