BOOKS OF CONDOLENCE THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT
BOOKS of condolence have been opened throughout the district and across the whole of Northern Ireland, to allow people to register their outpouring of grief for the dead and wounded of the Omagh bombing.
At an emergency meeting of Omagh District Council on Monday, councillors unanimously passed a resolution condemning the atrocity, and agreed that books of condolence would be opened at all public buildings in the town, and distributed to villages and churches in the area.
The council has also set up a memorial fund account with the First Trust Bank in the town's High Street. The account number is 55876365, and the sort code is 93 81 30.
Meanwhile, in view of the extent of the atrocity, the local authority was successful in having the 72-hour deadline for those who need to report a physical or mental injury sustained in the bomb extended to tomorrow (Friday).
Those who have not yet made a claim should report their injuries to the police by then.
An emergency co-ordinating centre was opened on Monday in the town's High Street, at the site of the old Training and Employment Agency.
Representatives from the Northern Ireland Office, Social Security Agency, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, DoE Planning Service, and the council's environmental health and building control departments are on hand there to offer advice. The number to call is Omagh 252599.
In addition, the council this week set up a Ceefax page to provide details of funerals and other arrangements, and it has agreed to facilitate the holding of any religious services in the local leisure centre.
Members agreed that representatives from the local authority were to be represented at all funerals, including those in Buncrana and Spain.
And, on Tuesday, wreaths were placed by the council, the Irish Congress of Trade Union and Beragh WI along the footpath at Drumragh Bridge.
The council has also expressed its sincere thanks to the staff of the Tyrone County Hospital and Social Services on the "outstanding manner" in which they dealt with the casualties of the atrocity.
Tribute was also paid to all emergency services and other hospitals which dealt so promptly with the injured.
