ASSEMBLY MAN VOICES HIS TOTAL DISGUST

Assemblyman voices his total disgust

Speaking close to the scene a couple of hours after the explosion, West Tyrone Assemblyman, Mr. Joe Byrne, said his immediate reaction was one of shock and total disgust.
"We all know that Omagh is a town of 25,000 people. Protestants and Catholics get on well with each other. This was a calm and peaceful summer but this bomb - taken in by people who want to cause the maximum disruption, and obviously death - have caused total devastation in this town.
"I am totally disgusted that human beings could plan and carry out what has taken place here.
"I have seen bodies being carried out totally dismembered. As a Christian, I cannot comprehend or understand how anyone, a fellow human, could plan or carry out such deeds in a peacetime situation.
"There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever. If there was a misunderstanding about where the bomb was, that is irrelevant. Many people have been killed not through their own fault and through no fault of the community here.
"I hope that everyone, from whatever political party and every individual politician will condemn what we have witnessed here today," he said.
