POLICE AUTHORITY CHAIRMAN PLEDGES TO TRACK DOWN THE BOMBERS

Police Authority chairman pledges full support to track down the bombers

THE Omagh-born chairman of the Police Authority, Mr. Pat Armstrong, has pledged his full support to the R.U.C. in tracking down the killers who planted Saturday's bomb in the town.
"I was deeply shocked and distressed to hear of the appalling attack on the people of my home town. Anyone who knows Market Street in Omagh will know how busy it is on Saturday afternoon, especially in August when families are planning and shopping for their children's return to school. As the Chief Constable has said, it is hard to come to any conclusion other than that bloody murder was the intent of the bombers", he said.
"I would like on behalf of the Police Authority to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all those bereaved, those injured and to their families. This was a cowardly and barbaric act which must be totally and unequivocally condemned by everyone who is committed to peace in Northern Ireland.
"The Authority will now provide whatever support is necessary to assist the Chief Constable in pursuing those who have perpetrated this wicked deed so they may be brought quickly to justice", Mr. Armstrong continued. "We welcome the Prime Minister's assurance that whatever resources are necessary will be provided for this vital task but I would also call on the whole community to lend their support and to do all they can to assist the police in their investigations.
"In the coming days our thoughts will be with the victims and their families. I was born in Omagh and lived and worked there for many years and I know how strong the sense of community spirit is there. I have every confidence that it will help them to get through this bitter tragedy.
"Though there is little we can say to ease their suffering it would be a tribute to the people of Omagh if the whole community was now to unite together in rejecting those who have shown utter disdain for human life and democracy. They are beneath contempt and have no place in a civilised society", he concluded.
