WI mourns loss of two members

MEMBERS of Beragh Women's Institute were mourning the loss of two members killed in Saturday's terrorist explosion.
Mrs. Veda Short, from Gortaclare, had been a member for some 20 years, and Mrs. Olive Hawkes, had joined the organisation in more recent times.
The president of the Beragh group, Mrs. Roberta O'Brien, said everyone was horrified to learn about the deaths of Mrs. Short and Mrs. Hawkes. Members are shocked and numbed, she said.
The chairwoman of the Northern Ireland Federation, Mrs. Kathleen Doherty, and Mrs. Kathleen Edwards, executive secretary of Clogher Valley, attended Mrs. Short's funeral at Seskinore on Wednesday, white at the same time at Mayne, Mrs. Irene Sproule and Mrs. Jean Neil, general secretary and general treasurer, respectively, of the Federation attend Mrs. Hawkes' funeral.
And she also said other members in the Institute had been affected by the deaths of relatives and serious injuries to other family friends.
"We have changed the format for our next meeting on September 7, with the guest speaker now cancelled so that we can have a service to remember those who are no longer with us," she said.
"It will be an opportunity to talk openly about our loss," she said.
The Beragh president, accompanied by the secretary, Mrs. Evelyn Mulligan and member, Mrs. Nell Dunne, laid a wreath at the Drurnragh footpath site, in memory of Mrs. Short and Mrs. Hawkes.
