A MEMBER of Strabane District Council has called on the Government to respond immediately and give the security forces full power to eradicate the type of people who carried out the bloody outrage in Omagh on Saturday.
Mr. Thomas Kerrigan, a DUP representative on the council for the Castlederg area, said some of the dead were from the Strabane district area, and many others injured were from the area.
Speaking to the Tyrone Constitution on Monday evening he condemned the attack and sympathised with those who had lost loved ones and with those who had been injured.
"I condemn this dreadful attack in our neighbouring district council area. It is one of the most serious to have occurred in the past 30 years of violence in Northern Ireland, " he said.
He said that what happened in Omagh was a result of the "soft security policy which had been implemented through the Province over the past 30 years by each Government in turn.
"Every time an atrocity happens security is stepped up for a short period and then it is eased off again. It is time the Government gave the security forces whatever powers are necessary to bring this terrible evil to an end," Mr. Kerrigan added.
He said the Government was allowing terrorists to run Northern Ireland.
"The current Government is allowing terrorists to take seats on bodies which will be looking after the running of this country, and that is no longer on," he added.
Mr. Kerrigan said he was appealing to the Government to take steps to have the people, if they could be called that, who carried out the brutal slaying of 28 people, eradicated from the country.
Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, one of Strabane's SDLP council members, Mr. Eugene McMenamin, visited Tyrone County Hospital.
He said words could not describe the carnage.
"It was totally barbaric. Innocent people going about their own business had been slain," he said.
He said he sympathised with those who had been bereaved and hoped that those who had been injured would be able to get on with their lives, despite the seriousness of some of their injuries.
"My heart goes out to all those involved," Mr. McMenamin said.
