I JUST THANKED GOD SHE WAS ALIVE

I just thanked God she was alive'

THE shock of seeing Sandy in so much pain was the jolt which made Mark realise just how much he loved her. For the first three nights after the bomb, he lay beside Sandy's intensive care bed holding her hand throughout the night. "Sandy was crying her eyes out, and I felt totally helpless," he recalled. "I just thanked God she was still alive. "All I could do was encourage her to think positive.
"I remember I kept telling her that we had the rest of our lives to love each other.
"I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her, and I loved her too much to leave her.
"I was on my knees for an hour in the hospital ward trying to pluck up the courage to ask her to marry me.
"We have our future to think about, and we hope others will get courage from our story to look ahead - and not let the bomb completely destroy them."
