Hospital staff 'in shock'
THE province's ambulance Chief sobbed uncontrollably as he described the carnage.
Paul McCormick, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, described it as "horrific".
"Our staff have worked tremendously - they have come from all over Northern Ireland. We had nine vehicles at the scene very quickly. "There were a lot of dead at the scene. Staff had to very quickly assess who would benefit most from urgent medical attention, before removing the dead with as much dignity as possible. "They were dealing with dead people, including very young children.
"They are highly-experienced staff who have seen a lot of atrocities, but many of them are in a state of shock.
"The injuries were multiple and horrific. They included burns, fractures, serious head injuries. The scene was one of total devastation and carnage." Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion has appealed for blood donors to attend emergency sessions being held throughout the province next week.
