Omagh bomb trial date set
THE Omagh bomb murder trial was adjourned again yesterday, to begin now on September 25.
A question mark over the health of London QC Orlando Pownall, a lawyer for Sean Gerard Hoey, could spell yet a further delay to the start of the biggest criminal trial in the North's legal history.
Trial judge Mr Justice Weir said he wanted to be told immediately if Mr Pownall could not meet the new date.
If the the trial of the 36-year-old electrician from Molly Road, Jonesborough, who denies a total of 58 charges including the murders of the 29 who died in the August, 1998, bombing, does not proceed then the judge said he would devise a "backstop" adjournment of four weeks to ensure Mr Pownall's recovery and a firm start date for the trial.
Mr Justice Weir said he wanted to fix a firm date for the trial to proceed and was not prepared to allow it to drift in and out of the court lists.
