Omagh offers trauma support if required

STAFF at Omagh Trauma Centre will be on standby to assist London in the coming weeks and months to deal with the aftermath of the horrendous bombing, if their help is requested.
At present the staff from the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation, which is based in Omagh, have no immediate plans to go to the English capital despite recent reports that they were to travel to the scene of the atrocity.
Centre director David Bolton said he had been in contact with Maudsley and Kings College hospitals in London and at present their own staff were able to offer victims all the help and support they needed.
"As soon as we heard of the bombing we rang and offered our assistance and asked if they had any requirements, but at this moment they do not," he said.
"They have a highly skilled and competent staff, which can deal with all the trauma issues arising from this awful tragedy.
"We have an ongoing link with the hospital and if they require anything from us we will certainly respond."
Mr Bolton added that following the Kings' Cross fire in 1987, a trauma centre was set up which has a highly skilled staff and it was to them the Omagh facility looked when they were setting up their trauma centre.
Following the September 11 bombings in New York, trauma centre staff members Michael Duffy and Kate Gillespie went to the city and delivered a two-day workshop to police, fire and port authority personnel.
