OMAGH CENTRE TO OFFER HELP ON TRAUMA
Omagh centre to offer help on trauma
THE Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation may be able to provide assistance to those traumatized by the Indian Ocean disaster, the News Letter has learned.
Centre director David Bolton, who has already been in touch with colleagues in Sri Lanka, said: "Clearly the immediate focus is on food, water, shelter, and reconnecting people.
"Our contribution would only come into play some time from now.
"However, people on the ground with concerns for and responsibilities for mental health and community cohesion need to begin to plan for the medium and long term now. This is where we can help."
He added: "We are beginning to develop a web-site on community recovery drawing upon the experience of the members of an International Network which the centre coordinates," he said.
"That work is only beginning. We have offered support to some organisations working in the field."
He said the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation will respond if asked and if its efforts are followed up by those on the ground.
The trauma organisation, based in Omagh, was born out of the Northern Ireland conflict and the 1998 Omagh bomb.
