Omagh actor takes role as IRA terrorist

AWARD-winning Omagh actor Gerard McSorley is to play an IRA terrorist in his next movie.
McSorley, who won best actor at the Ifta awards last week, returned to his home town to play the part of Michael Gallagher in Omagh, the movie about the Real IRA atrocity in the Tyrone market town.
In his next movie, Johnny Was, he will star alongside pop singer Samantha Mumba, footballer-turned-hard-man actor Vinnie Jones and former Who lead singer Roger Daltrey.
In the �2.26 million production, which will be made by Co Down-based company Borderline, McSorley will play the part of a man who breaks out of Brixton jail, and in an effort to derail the peace process plants a number of well-placed bombs at significant targets.
He needs the help of a former IRA bomber who has turned his back on the republican paramilitaries after one of his devices injured civilians.
Flynn, the character played by McSorley, tracks him down to a London flat to put him under pressure to return to terrorism.
Samantha Mumba, the 21-year-old singer who starred in 2002 movie The Time Machine, plays Rita, who lives in a flat downstairs from the master bomber.
She said: "Rita is basically a drug addict. When I read the script I loved it immediately. I think it's going to be an incredible movie "
Meanwhile, Enniskillen actor Adrian Dunbar is to direct a movie about the Irish socialist James Connolly.
With acting credits including the Crying Game -which also starred Belfast's Stephen Rea - and Hear My Song, which was based on the life of Londonderry singer Josef Locke, Dunbar wants the public and trade unions to finance the biopic about the 1916 revolutionary, which is provisionally titled Nora's Journey.
The film is due to go into production next summer and will be released in the spring of 2006, with actor Peter Mullan playing Connolly, who was inside the Dublin GPO during the 1916 Easter Rising and was executed shortly afterwards by a firing
