Victims of terror deserve better
SUCCESSIVE Westminster governments over the past three decades have shown little sympathy for the plight of innocent victims of the Troubles, and Prime Minister Tony Blair's decision not to identify with events later this month marking the fifth anniversary of the Omagh bombing, which resulted in the deaths of 28 people, is a sad symptom of how much our ruling establishment really cares.
Northern Ireland Office minister Angela Smith may hold a portfolio which includes looking after victims, but she shows little consideration or compassion for Sharon Gallagher, who has suffered from severe depression since her younger brother, Aiden was murdered by the Real IRA in the Omagh atrocity on August 15, 1998.
Sharon is merely trying to secure the tenancy of a vacant Housing Executive home in Omagh to be near to her family. But, appallingly, she has been given the cold shoulder by Victims' Minister Ms Smith, who arbitrarily points out: "It would be out of the question for me to intervene to ask for preferential treatment for victims."
